Annotations and Meaning.

Eminem's song "Bad Guy" from Marshall Mathers LP 2 (2013) addresses the issue of bullying and double-standards, referencing the death of actor Christopher Reeve in 2009. The song has been reused for "The Death of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce), now called "Brand New Dance," which features references to Reeve. The song is reminiscent of "My Darling" where Eminem and Slim argue about how they influence each other. Eminem created the Slim Shady persona in the mid-90s after forming a group with five other Detroit-based rappers. He created this persona with the intention of sharing his controversial views on the world and blaming it all on Shady when he gets targeted. Slim Shady lyrics have been used to criticize the media in the late-90s and 2000s, with the infamous persona returning for every upcoming album released by the rapper, most predominantly on The Slim Shady LP and Relapse. Colombian singer Shakira is known worldwide for her dancing and curvaceous figure, shown off in music videos like her hit "Hips Don't Lie." "Got you shook" is Gen Z slang for unsettling someone, which Em uses ironically given his disdain for Gen Z throughout the album. Eminem lists many of the people he's famously had beef with or mocked in songs over the course of his career: paralyzed actor Christopher Reeve, Machine Gun Kelly, comedian Nick Cannon, Limp Bizkit, former owner of The Source magazine Benzino, Will Smith, rapper Canibus, rapper Lord Jamar, Ja Rule, and Em's own mother, Debbie Nelson. Both phrases Eminem uses to describe the final blow are references to his own work. "Killshot" is the title of Eminem's 2018 diss track directed at MGK, and "Coup de grâce" is the subtitle of this album. Paul Rosenberg, Eminem's longtime manager and friend, has been featured in numerous skits on Em's albums where he leaves a voicemail reacting to the content of the album and advises him to "tone it down". Following The Death of Slim Shady's themes of revisiting the past, Em turns the Paul trope around by calling Paul and telling him how crazy Slim Shady is."Guilty Conscience 2" is the twelfth track from Eminem's album, The Death of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce). This song is a follow-up to Eminem's 1999 single "Guilty Conscience." While the original concentrated on Slim Shady convincing people to do morally reprehensible things, the sequel features a heated argument between Eminem and his alter ego, Slim Shady.
[Intro]
The introduction sets up the antagonism between Eminem and Slim Shady. Slim Shady mocks Eminem, questioning his contentment and implying that, despite his success, Eminem can't escape his darker side.
[Verse]
The verse goes into Eminem's mental struggle, which is marked by self-torment and a sense of being stuck. He discusses his beginnings as a nerd and how he transformed into a nasty figure when confronted. This metamorphosis is depicted as the effect of his alter ego's influence. Eminem discusses his problematic past, addressing the derogatory things he has made throughout the years. The songs address the societal response and criticism he receives for his bold views. Slim Shady mocks Eminem's attempts to gain a conscience and exposes the hypocrisy in his activities. The stanza also emphasizes the conflict between Eminem's desire for controversy and his need for acceptance. Eminem acknowledged Slim Shady's contribution to his career, acknowledging that his alter persona allowed him to communicate ideas he couldn't otherwise articulate. However, this resulted in intense scrutiny and opposition, affecting his public image.
[Chorus]
The chorus highlights Eminem's internal turmoil, with Slim Shady accusing him of being weak and a puppet. Eminem's effort to reconcile his conscience and provocative nature is palpable as he struggles with his dual personality.
[Verse]
The second verse builds on the dispute, with Slim Shady accusing Eminem of forsaking his true character. Slim Shady attacks Eminem for attempting to be politically right and for avoiding his problematic background. The alter ego claims credit for Eminem's success, emphasizing the persona's part in influencing his career. Slim Shady's impact is seen as a double-edged sword, rewarding Eminem with fame and money while also causing public uproar and personal suffering. Eminem's thoughts on previous occurrences and the criticism he received highlights the complexities of his connection with his alter ego.
[Outro]
The farce ends with a fictitious chat between Eminem and his manager, Paul Rosenberg. Eminem recounts a dream in which he was troubled by his previous deeds and the criticism from numerous groups. The sketch concludes with Eminem realizing that his alter persona, Slim Shady, will always be a part of him, no matter how hard he tries to separate himself. "Guilty Conscience 2" is a strong study of Eminem's mental conflict with his alter-ego, Slim Shady. The song explores themes including identity, controversy, and the implications of fame. Eminem's honest and introspective chat illustrates the complexity of his identity and the long-term impact of his darker side on his life and business. Song by Eminem. song video thumbnail

Guilty Conscience 2 Song Lyrics

Guilty Conscience 2 by Eminem

[Intro: Eminem & Slim Shady]
Welp, we did it now
I know right
It's beautiful ain't it?
Yeah, you happy now, b**ch?
Yep
Alright, you got what you wanted
Yeah, what?
Let me go
Ha, never

[Verse: Eminem & Slim Shady]
Why does it feel like I'm always being tortured?
The bad apple spoils the whole orchard
Used to read comic books to learn more words
'Cause deep down I'm a dork, just a core nerd
Meaning nerd to the core 'til I'm cornered
Then I'm the coroner
What shot is this? First, second, it's your third
Vision is more blurred
Speech is more slurred
Can't even form words
It's likе a dream up inside of a dream
I'm trappеd and it's worse than I could've imagined, it's madness
Can't wake up, try my damnedest, but old habits are coming back
And now transgenders attack us, frontwards and backwards
They laughin', throwin midgets at us (Ha)
This ain't no dream now, huh? See what I mean now?
You see how they tryna make me out to be some kind of mean vile obscene, foul prick
I kick one freestyle 'bout beating down a special needs child and these people freak out
Told you we'd get slaughtered for saying "Retarded"
Aw, Marshall's gaining a conscience (f**k you)
f**k, this may come as a shock
I have you astonished regardless
Here's the thing about retarded people
What?
They don't f**king know they're retarded
Well, okay, you wanna fat shame, b**ch
Two can play that game (What?)
You wanna judge people? (Yeah)
Matter of fact, ain't you the same one who hated bullies calling you bad names? (Yep)
Then you turn around and did the exact same (So?)
Just immature and literally
You're still mentally
Thirteen and still thirsty for some controversy
You still picking on Christopher Reeves
Yeah, but you're me
And we're a team
So that means, we're in cahoots
That's conspiracy to commit murder lyrically
So clearly, you're the accessory like jewelry
You ain't the judge or the jury, you're just as guilty
You rip on paraplegics, man, seriously?
Oh, b**ch, it's a joke
No, it's not, it's embarrassing (What?)
Like David Carradine found with a pair of jeans at his ankles and belt 'round his larynx
I know, it's a scary scene
They're coming with everything
Little people are trolling me (Ha)
They saying they've had it (What?) up to here with me
Oh, hilarity (Come on)
Nah, do your thing
f**k deaf people, yeah
Well, between me and you
I've think they've had it up to here with me too (What the f**k?)
Sorry I'm not perfect as you, Marshall
Punching down on little people (Yeah), not cool (Whoops)
You just sound like a dick, wait, nah, fool (What?)
When I say, "f**k midgets," I mean Ja Rule (Oh)
And I know that Chris Reeves song was recorded in 2004 for Encore (Yeah)
f**k'd you take it off for?
'Cause he died, man, that motherf**ker did that bullsh*t on purpose to ruin the song for us (Man)
Man, I never seen a bigger pussy than you
b**ch, look at all the sh*t the media's puttin' me through (What?)
'Cause of all the f**k sh*t that you pushed me to do (Me?)
Should've knew when I found you, you were just too good to be true (Hmm)
That's how we end up in these quagmires
You said you had my back, liar
But I helped you get your stacks higher (Yeah)
That's diamond sales like sapphires
Rap buyers, admires pack lines of admirers
Now they say you lack ire
That's why your satire backfires (Yeah)
Flat tires, no longer that guy you were prior to this
Yeah, and I scare you 'cause (Why?) I'm who you used to be (Who?)
The you who didn't crumble under the scrutiny (Wait, what?)
When it was you and me (Yeah)
I gave you power to use me as an excuse to be evil (I know)
You created me to say everything you didn't have the balls to say (Yep)
What you were thinking but in a more diabolic way
You fed me pills and a bottle of alcohol a day (Okay)
Made me too strong for you and lost control of me (You're right)
I took over you totally
You were socially awkward 'til you molded me (Yeah)
You was a loner and nobody
'Cause of me, you didn't take sh*t from nobody
Now look at you (What?)
Now you just a punk (Man), little scaredy cat (Word)
Got you shook like Shakira's ass (Yeah)
To look at your reflection staring back, b**ch
It's just a mirror, relax
Man, you're so full of sh*t, you need MiraLAX
Open your mouth and sh*t flies out, just lies
You thinkin' you can rip my ass, undo these zipties
You can just undo my feet and keep my hands tied
'Cause like an avalanche, I'd still win by a landside
Oh, you think so, b**ch? Yeah, I know so
Okay, your hands and feet, I let 'em both go
Yeah, f**k now, ho, give me that gun, no, don't
Rear naked choke hold, let me go, yo
Here, take it, bozo (Yeah)
Weird bait, you homo (You ready?)
No, don't shoot (Here we go)
Bro, no, no
Now say you're sorry and you didn't mean any of it
I'm sorry Marshall's a pussy, he's Dre and Jimmy's puppet (What?)
Sorry he gives a f**k, but pretends he doesn't
God, you piece of sh*t, that does it (Uh-oh, wait)
Yeah, b**ch, this is for him (What?)
Christopher, MGK, Nick, and for Limp Bizkit and them
Midgets and Ben— (Man, please)
'Zino, in addition to him
Will Smith and to Canibus, if you're listening, this is the end (Okay, okay, I'll stop)
So to Jamar and Ja Rule and to all
My feuds including ma (What?)
I'm welcoming you to my (No, no)
Last hoorah, I bid you goodbye (Come on, man, don't do this)
Murder suicide
Killshot, booyaka, c**k s**ker
Coup de grâce, motherf**ker
[Outro: Eminem & Paul Rosenberg]
Oh, what the f**k?
Come on, come on, come on, come on
Yeah?
Paul
You're not gonna f**king believe this, bro
I had this dream, it was f**king crazy
It was like, the old me came back and the new me
And took over my brain and had me saying all this f**ked up sh*t
About little people and Caitlyn Jenner and
PC police were chasing me
And f**king Gen Z was tryna kill me
And quadriplegics
And Christopher Reeves
And I was saying all this f**ked up sh*t
And I couldn't stop saying it
And then I wake and it was like I was still dreaming
f**k you
Wait
Haha
