She and I Song Lyrics

Miss Paul.
Mrs. Cat. It's been a while.
For years I could just die.
After all this time,
She and I in the same state with nothing to do but wait.
This is the dress I've been planning to wear if we win,
And plan to put it on before results are in. Bold.
I only took it out to iron it.
So it appears you mean to burn that old flag if we lose.
No, we sew a new star on this flag for each state we beat.
Tennessee would make it complete.
And you've already sewn it on?
Not yet.
Should I curse or cry?
After all this time,
She and I in the same state
With nothing left to do but wait.
I hope you realize if we lose,
It will be due to the backing you cost us by picking the president during the war.
I hope you realize if we win,
It will be despite the power you lost us by bowing to the president during the war.
I made allies.
I took action.
Who cares who gets the credit or the blame?
What matters is the work gets done.
Says the woman who has started writing suffrage memoirs when we haven't even won.
She hasn't changed.
She hasn't changed at all.
She'll never know.
Should I just go?
I know you think I'm this arrogant kid,
But I've just always known it's my calling to see this movement through.
And I can't stop moving till I do.

Carrie, you were this girl
When you first arrived as a fiery young leader-to-be,
Raging at elders and raring to go.
Then when Susan said you were off track,
You played by her rules,
As you have ever since.
But Alice never held back.
So isn't it wild?
After all this time,
I feel like a parent made to reprimand my child,
But who is rather pleased to have her do what I always wanted to.
Rebel daughter and careful mother,
Maybe she and I always needed each other.

Alice.
I...
I...
What?

Annotations and Meaning of She and I:

Creation

"She and I" has been part of the SUFFS vision from the beginning. Interestingly, the development process revealed that Act II had a much clearer picture than Act I, necessitating a reverse engineering approach. Musically, this song comes late in the narrative, introducing a fresh sound as the story transitions to Nashville. To reflect the new setting, I shifted from the usual piano-based compositions to guitar-based tunes, aiming for simpler chord progressions that provide a sonic respite from the earlier intense scenes of prison and fire.

The inspiration for this song came from "He Wanted to Say" from Ragtime, which is a masterpiece in musical theatre. In "He Wanted to Say," Mother’s Younger Brother expresses his deepest feelings, but the audience realizes he cannot convey these emotions to Coalhouse directly. This unspoken agony influenced "She and I," where Carrie has a profound realization about her relationship with Alice. She sees Alice as a reflection of her younger self, filled with both envy and respect.

However, the song takes a turn as we snap back to reality. Carrie, despite her revelation, can't bring herself to share this with Alice, leaving the moment unresolved. This lack of resolution is reflected both in the show and on the album, as there is no concluding button, emphasizing the lingering tension and unspoken connection between the characters.
Miss Paul.

Mrs. Cat. It's been a while.

This opening introduces Alice Paul and Carrie Chapman Catt, two prominent figures in the American suffrage movement. The use of "Miss" and "Mrs." reflects their differing statuses and possibly their views on traditional roles.

For years I could just die.

After all this time,

She and I in the same state with nothing to do but wait.

This part conveys the long and painful struggle both women have endured. Being in the "same state" symbolizes their united but tense anticipation for the outcome of their efforts.

This is the dress I've been planning to wear if we win,

And plan to put it on before results are in. Bold.

I only took it out to iron it.

Alice's preparation of a victory dress shows her optimism and determination. The act of ironing symbolizes readiness and hope.

So it appears you mean to burn that old flag if we lose.

No, we sew a new star on this flag for each state we beat.

Tennessee would make it complete.

And you've already sewn it on?

Not yet.

Here, they discuss adding a star to the American flag for each state that supports suffrage. Tennessee's crucial role highlights the final step towards victory. The flag represents the culmination of their struggle.

Should I curse or cry?

After all this time,

She and I in the same state

With nothing left to do but wait.

The repetition emphasizes their anxiety and the emotional toll of the waiting period. The line "curse or cry" reflects the uncertainty of their fate.

I hope you realize if we lose,

It will be due to the backing you cost us by picking the president during the war.

I hope you realize if we win,

It will be despite the power you lost us by bowing to the president during the war.

This section shows their disagreement on strategy during wartime. Alice criticizes Carrie for her political alliances, while Carrie defends her actions as necessary compromises.

I made allies.

I took action.

Who cares who gets the credit or the blame?

What matters is the work gets done.

Carrie emphasizes the importance of unity and results over personal recognition. This highlights the tension between idealism and pragmatism within the movement.

Says the woman who has started writing suffrage memoirs when we haven't even won.

She hasn't changed.

She hasn't changed at all.

She'll never know.

Should I just go?

Alice's frustration with Carrie’s perceived self-importance and premature celebration is evident. She questions whether to stay or leave, reflecting their strained relationship.

I know you think I'm this arrogant kid,

But I've just always known it's my calling to see this movement through.

And I can't stop moving till I do.

Alice defends her passion and dedication. She sees herself as a destined leader, driven to complete the mission.

Carrie, you were this girl

When you first arrived as a fiery young leader-to-be,

Raging at elders and raring to go.

Then when Susan said you were off track,

You played by her rules,

As you have ever since.

But Alice never held back.

Carrie reflects on her own youthful defiance and subsequent adherence to established strategies. She contrasts this with Alice’s unwavering radicalism.

So isn't it wild?

After all this time,

I feel like a parent made to reprimand my child,

But who is rather pleased to have her do what I always wanted to.

Rebel daughter and careful mother,

Maybe she and I always needed each other.

Carrie sees herself as a maternal figure to Alice, appreciating her boldness despite their conflicts. This acknowledgment suggests mutual respect and the complementary nature of their roles.

Alice.

I...

I...

What?

The abrupt ending implies unresolved tension and unspoken emotions. The ellipses and the question indicate hesitation and uncertainty, capturing the complex dynamics between the two leaders.

Themes and Messages:

  • Unity and Division: The song explores the unity and division between two key suffrage leaders, reflecting broader themes of collaboration and conflict within social movements.
