Finish the Fight (reprise) Song Lyrics

I don't want to have to compromise,
I don't want to have to beg for crumbs from a country that doesn't care what I say.
I don't want to follow in old footsteps,
I don't want to be a meek little one in games they play.

I want to march in the street,
I want to get on the mine and stand with my sisters to stir up a strike.
I want to cut through the noise and make a fire ignite till our generation has made things right.

Yes, I want to know how it feels when we finally finish the fight.

Info

The epilogue sequence, "Finish The Fight (Reprise)," has been crucial to the author's concept since the first outlines in 2014. According to her, this scene captures the show's central message, portraying the optimism and anguish that come with passing the torch from generation. The story had to be extended into the 1970s since the author believed Alice's key epiphany happened later in her life.

Originally, this scene was entirely recit with a '70s backbeat. It was adequate, but lacked the emotional depth the author desired. After penning the new "Finish the Fight," she recognized how important it was. At the start of the show, Alice tries to sing Carrie's song but fails and instead chooses her own. Alice sings Carrie's song again 50 years later, recognizing her transition ("Me, the old fogey / How strange"). At this point, a new young figure appears, singing her version of Alice's song with the same musical hook but different lyrics, completing the generational and musical hand-off.

Once this premise was established, the author focused on creating an effective narrative scenario to set up this tremendous musical encounter. This scene has been her favorite from the show. She explains the delight of sitting at the desk as the older Alice, while Broadway rookie Laila Drew comes center stage and delivers a heartfelt performance. The anticipation grows as the ensemble prepares to march as ancestors in the finale, resulting in a magnificent and moving ending to the show.
