Gurney Song Lyrics - Gurney Halleck

Soundtrack: Dune: Part Two

Gurney Song Lyrics

Gurney Song Song Lyrics

[Verse 1]
My present keeps a company of sh*t
The mindless droning on of spit
Give me words, come grass and grain
Do away with these idiots I blame

[Verse 2]
My stillsuit's full of p**s, my ass caked in sand
Save me from this devil's heat
Another world, another land
Damn you fate that put me here
Longing for what was once so dear

Caladan is a vision renewed
As I shrivel with this halfwit brood

My stillsuit's full of p**s, my ass caked in sand
Save me from this devil's heat.
Another world, another land
Damn you fate that put me here
Longing for what was once so dear

Song Facts and Creation

Brolin's Gurney character is seen singing and playing the baliset. The baliset is a string musical instrument referred to within the "Dune" novels.
The song in the much-anticipated sequel helmed by Denis Villeneuve embodies who Brolin's character of Gurney Halleck is. Bringing a completely new dimension to the character of Gurney with this song, touching the bitterly real, humorous realities of life on the desert planet Arrakis. Author also used couple of words from Tom Waits songs.

It brings to light a project that Zimmer describes as having a "massive amount of songs" left over from the project, suggesting the vast work behind the scenes. The process was punctuated by a blend of Brolin's lyrical contributions and the musical genius from Zimmer. Brolin, set on the mission by Villeneuve, he got to pen down the lyrics that summed up Gurney's frustrations and longing for another world that would be so different from the desolation that is Arrakis. And the creative process was not without its burden of having "to handle the daunting communication difficulties and expectations associated with working with a composer of Zimmer's stature.
But the result is a track that Zimmer hints could be part of the wealth of unreleased music from the "Dune" projects. Gurney Halleck is a skilled warrior and loyal retainer of the House Atreides in Frank Herbert's "Dune" series. Apparently, he is best known for his martial abilities, great loyalty to the Atreides family, and some extraordinary talent in music and poetry, giving him an added dimension to that of a warrior.
Halleck is hence commissioned with the task of teaching Paul on fighting and advising him as a mentor to the leading protagonist. The character is compound, evoking the ferocity of a soldier merged with the sensitivity of an artist.

Song Meaning

The song gives insight through the window of the mind that is Gurney Halleck expressing turmoil, annoyance of the heart at displeasure from his environment.

The lyrics of the song tell of Gurney's weariness from the desert, his contempt for the stillsuit that was used to live in Arrakis, and his longing for the life on Caladan, the water-rich homeworld of House Atreides. The humor set against the cold reality of surviving on a hostile planet deepens the character more, allowing for fuller expression of his life and why he does what he does.

This would, of course, make the integration of such a song into "Dune: Part Two" another shoe-in, as Villeneuve continues his dedication to the attempt to flesh out the rich, complexly detailed world of Frank Herbert's masterpiece and maintain a faithful adaptation in both tone and literal interpretation. Zimmer's work particularly assists in the development of a score that transcends the boundaries of traditional film scoring to enhance Villeneuve's vision for embedding themes and emotions of the story into the sonic landscape of the world. This song is one of the memorable moments within "Dune: Part Two" as the story of Paul Atreides' continuing path reaches both the depth of story and innovation in sound, capturing the much larger themes of power, survival, and the human spirit in an unforgiving sandstorm on Arrakis.
