Song Text
Any Fun Song Lyrics
You never had any fun, so I won't come around
You never had anyone, so I won't let you down
You never had any fun, so I won't come around
You never had any fun, any fun. Noooo
Down in the basement, alone with the high hopes, alright. Alright
Well, it's a downpour and the water, it is rising
And yes, she's a system and the plan, so devising
Let's go!
You never had any fun, so I won't come around
You never had anyone, so I won't let you down
You never had any fun, so I won't come around
You never
Alright. Help in? and the hits keep on coming
I said back to the old way, yeah, just long distance running
So we had little argument outside the bar
If you get in our apartment, to get out to the car
Make it look real when you pretend to feel, alright. Alright. Alright
You never had any fun, so I won't come around
You never had anyone
You never had any fun, so I won't come around
You never had anyone

Annotations and Meaning:
"Any Fun" by Coconut Records is a song about isolation and disillusionment with hollow relationships. The repetitive chorus, "You never had any fun, so I won't come around," sums up a sense of hopelessness and massive disconnection between the speaker and the addressee. This person seems to lack joy and genuine relationships, which in turn causes the speaker to withdraw.
The lines "Alone with the high hopes, alright; down in the basement" emit good imagery of a static, down situation. The word "basement" refers to the deepest or the concealed part of one's psyche in most instances; it could be standing for some kind of hidden hope or dream. Reference to a downpour and rising of water might really mean overwhelming emotional situations or problems, bearing in mind that water indeed stands for emotions in literary connotation.
Routine disagreements and pretense are more marked with lines such as "So we had little argument outside the bar. Make it look real when you pretend to feel." These lines would seem to suggest that the relationship is superficial, not only that but even strained, maybe even pretend.
The line "Alright. Help in? and the hits keep on coming" starts a somber note through the expression of defeat, of which it could only mean one thing: the character was already in acceptance that such woes were never-ending. This kind of acceptance may reflect a larger commentary that endures from the difficulties of life with little expectation for change or improvement in personal connections.
In other words, the fact that the song later finds its way onto a TV series soundtrack could imply something about its themes. The dislocation and quotidian discontent seem wholly reflective, perhaps, of the story or emotional territory of the show, which imbues watching it with a sense of investment into the travels of its characters or ambiance of the series.
